Halal and pure sustenance.
Apart from the forbidden items mentioned in the previous chapter, all healthy, pure, useful and usable foods obtained from the earth that are suitable for human consumption are considered halal and pure sustenance in Islam. This category includes not only the produce of cultivated fields but also naturally growing wild herbs, fruits, wild grains and minerals.
Allah the Almighty has not declared anything that grows from the earth or is found naturally in the wild to be inherently impure. However, certain substances may be intoxicating or toxic, even though they also possess medicinal benefits. Since Allah has not created anything without a purpose, one should exercise wisdom, caution, and experience regarding their use.
God says: O people! Eat of what is on earth that is lawful and good, and do not follow in the footsteps of Satan. He is to you an open enemy.
Q-06:145(O Prophet) Say: In what has been revealed to me, I do not find anything forbidden for one who wishes to eat—except that it be carrion, spilled blood, the flesh of swine—for it is impure—or an animal slaughtered in the name of other than Allah.
Q-16:114So, eat of the lawful and good provisions that Allah has provided, and be grateful for His favors, if it is Him you worship.
Q-02:168O people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan; he is to you a clear enemy.
Exception (in case of compulsion).
The Holy Quran permits the consumption of forbidden items in a state of dire necessity; however, this concession applies only under extreme compulsion—such as when no lawful and wholesome food is available, when hunger is so severe that life is at risk, or when a substance is indispensable for medical treatment. There are specific conditions attached to this permission:
One should consume only as much as is necessary.
One must not exceed the limit—that is, one should not eat to the point of fullness.
And one must maintain the conviction in one's heart that the substance remains forbidden.
Therefore, this principle does not apply under normal circumstances; rather, it applies only to extraordinary emergency situations.
But whoever is compelled (by the severity of hunger), neither transgressing nor abuser, then there is no sin on him. Indeed, Allah is Most Forgiving and Merciful.
Q-05:03Then whoever is compelled by severe hunger, without being inclined to sin, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Q-06:145, 16:115But whoever is compelled (by the severity of hunger), neither transgressing nor abuser, then indeed your Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
